A lot of newbie runners make the critical mistake of not taking the time in selecting a good shoe. What they usually look at is the price tag when at the store as well as a general feel for how it fits, like you would with any other shoe. While that is generally a great way to pick out shoes for wearing to work and going out, it doesn't quite cut it for picking running shoes.

First and foremost, a good running shoe is an investment; you are investing in your personal comfort, having a good running experience, and staying healthy. The best running shoes are going to be the ones that fit your specific needs. That doesn't always mean they will cost and arm and a leg. But, even if they do then they will be worth it in the long run.

Plenty of people by a 'clearance shoe' or bargain shoe thinking they may or may not want to run a lot. The problem is that a crappy shoe can mean shin splints, knee pain, and other aches right off the bat which then make you bitch and moan that, 'running sucks' right before you quit. What to Look For

The big key about a running shoe it that is helps with proper pronation which is an even distribution of weight and force as you roll your foot from heel to toe as your foot comes down. If you roll to the inside or the out then you have uneven weight distribution and more than likely the shock absorbers in the shoes aren't going to provide you the assistance they are meant to making strides more impactful.

So the trick is to look at the shoes in your closet for the wear pattern. If your shoes are worn on the inside then you 'overpronate' and should look at 'motion control' running shoes. If you wear on the outside then your 'underpronate' and want 'neutral cushioned' shoes. Lastly if you have even wear then you just want a 'stability' running shoe.

Next you need to check your arch. If you go to a serious shoe store they can check your arch or you can just get your foot wet and make a footprint on the ground. Flat footed people will see a big impression, neutral will see a slight indent on either side of the middle of the foot and high arch people will have a narrow line between the heel and ball of the foot. High-arch people want a more cushioned shoe, flat feet are geared towards 'motion control' and a regular arch is fine with a stability shoe.

So what are the best running shoes? Now that you have a better idea about what type of shoe type your foot needs it really gets down to style, price, and fit. There are tons of brands out there but for my money the top three you should look at are New Balance, Asics, and Nike. Nike and Asics have a very wide range of prices and styles which makes it easier to find something at a decent price that meets your specific foot needs. Brooks is another brand that is often mentioned but you can usually only find it at a specialty store and not big box stores.

When you consider that you might run three times a week on them and you usually get at least six months of use if not more then you are paying only a little over a dollar a day. Most people pay more than that for their gym fees each month. The benefit of a great shoe really is in how much better you feel during and after a run because reducing injuries and increasing comfort means more effective training!
