Welcome to the World Blue Ivy Carter

Beyonce and Jay-Z welcomed their first child this week; a lovely and healthy girl named Blue Ivy Carter. So why the odd name? Well obviously when you are a super-mega star you need your child to stand out as much as you do. Of course there are rampant rumors about Blue Ivy Carter and the name's real significance. Jaz-Z really loves blue judging by his albums (the Blueprint 1, 2, and 3). The other rumor is that Ivy stands for IV which equals 4 and since Beyonce and Shawn Carter were both born on the 4th and married on the 4th, naturally they needed to tattoo their child in the same manner.

This is getting just a little ridiculous. What is with these people and why are their parents not slapping them upside the head for choosing these crazy names? It is a kid, not a watch you are engraving! Have a little consideration for the playground and the type of razzing your child will face from the names you give. It is bad enough they have that 'silver spoon' other kids usually don't like; now you want to add to it by giving them a messed up name?

Honestly, Jay-Z and Beyonce did okay with Blue Ivy Carter. Compared to other gems such as Pilot Inspektor, Audio Science, Moxie Crimefighter, Bardot Vita, Satchel, Jermajesty, Moon Unit, Sage Moonblood, Bronx Mowgli, and my all-time favorite Kal-El Coppola (seriously Nicholas Cage?) their choice is pretty tame. Much like when we heard about Kyd, son of David Duchovny, it was noteworthy but quickly lost in the crazy world of "stars".

Why can't these crazy people just use a somewhat normal first name and then use the middle name for 'that special touch'? Probably the same reason they have solid gold toilets in the guest bathroom (holla Russell Simmons).  But here is the biggest problem with naming your child Blue Ivy Carter or some other name. You are doing it for you. There is not much consideration for the child and what they will have to go through in life carrying an albatross of a name like that. Congratulations on your first parenting failure by putting your own wants and needs in front of your child's!
