Top 10 War Movies

Do I need to even state that this is for guys? War movies are pretty much 99% for guys no matter how they are billed. So in honor of Memorial Day, we here at Manwall have comprised a list of our top war movies of all time. If you haven't seen them then you need to make sure to go out and rent them because they are worth your time.

 

Glory - The story of courage in the Civil War that was never publicized because racism. This movie stars the incomparable Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington along with Cary Elwes and Matthew Broderick.

Gettysburg - This is the best Civil War movie out there with an amazing attention to detail. This 4 hour epic features Jeff Daniels and Martin Sheen along with an amazing collection of facial hair.

Full Metal Jacket - This movie is brilliant and chilling. Stanley Kubrick can really make a strange and yet must watch movie about the Vietnam era. Pyle and Joker are two of the most original characters every found in a war movie.

MASH - Before the TV show there was the movie by Robert Altman that discussed the highs and the lows of the Korean War. Donald Sutherland was masterful as Hawkeye with Elliot Gould setting the tone with Trapper.

Platoon - Because Vietnam War movies are the rage and we love Charlie Sheen. Oliver Stone did an amazing job with the story and Tom Berender and Willem Dafoe brought their acting ability in spades for this movie. Side note: Johnny Depp is in here too.

Inglorious Basterds - This movie was an interesting look at Nazi occupied France in World War II. Brad Pitt leads a great cast in this very different movie about the war directed by Quentin Tarantino.

The Great Escape - This classic focused on life for the captured soldier back in the civilized days of World War II where they were placed in camps and then tried to escape. Steve McQueen at his best along with James Garner, James Coburn, Charles Bronson, and Richard Attenborough.

The Hurt Locker - We finally have a more current mention to the list. This movie is a current piece on the dealings of those brave men who disarm bombs found everywhere in Iraq. It had Oscar nominations for a reason.

Thin Red Line - Here is another movie that seems to have flown under the radar and yet is brilliant. This masterpiece on World War II features an amazing cast with Sean Penn, John Cusack, John Travolta, Nick Nolte, Woody Harrelson, and George Clooney.

Apocalypse Now - Francis Ford Coppola goes to town with the best movie of all time about war. From the choppers playing 'Ride of the Valkyries' to the classic line, "I love the smell of napalm in the morning," this is the must see war movie that shows what kind of hell people endured in Vietnam. Martin Sheen and Marlon Brando are fantastic.
