Stephen Colbert for President!

Stephen Colbert for is running for President,  at least in South Carolina; depending on the results of his newly formed exploratory committee. Comedian and faux political activist Stephen Colbert made the bold announcement last night that he would launch a committee to explore how he might do in an election for the President of the United States. But he would only run in his home state of South Carolina.

This is a result of an actual poll taken of voters in South Carolina that showed that Colbert would take 5% of the votes which was greater than John Huntsman's 4% mark. For those who aren't up on all the politco stuff, Huntsman just came in 3rd in the recent New Hampshire primary. Ron Paul and Rick Perry only managed 8% and 7% of the votes respectively in the same poll.

So how pathetic is the state of politics when voters would actually push a political satirist into office ahead of people with years of experience and training? Honestly it might not be that bad of an idea. Many people enjoy watching shows like the Colbert Report and the Daily Show because both hosts are funny and provide spot-on political commentary that resonates with many unsatisfied Americans. John Stewart routinely offers to debate other pundits who typically will not accept his challenges.

It is rather upsetting that comedians who host nightly half-hour shows can seem to understand better the needs of the people in the U.S. as well as the state of the political landscape compared to those whose job it is. When the hell did so many of our politicians turn into such idiotic pussies? We used to have strong, charismatic, and intelligent people stepping up to lead us. Now we get a bunch of guys who can't even seem to say anything useful that people understand in a debate. Will Stephen save us?

Sadly, this is a tact Colbert has used in the past as a chance to boost ratings. While he might run in his home state (and probably come in second) he will not run anywhere else. While Stephen Colbert for President would surely be a big story and he would no doubt capture many votes. It will just not happen. Unlike many of the politicians in Washington, Colbert is much too smart to want to be associated full time with those people.
