Privacy on Facebook? That's a Good One!

So my sister posts this big thing on her Facebook page a few days ago about privacy and punishing people that break the law that use her private information for anything. I thought it was rather funny. A few people politely pointed out that Facebook's terms and conditions override that lovely statement she posted which was:

"PRIVACY NOTICE: Warning - any person and/or institution and/or Agent and/or Agency of any governmental structure including but not limited to the United States Federal Government also using or monitoring/using this website or any of its associated websites, you do NOT have my permission to utilize any of my profile information nor any of the content contained herein including, but not limited to my photos, and/or the comments made about my photos or any other "picture" art posted on my profile.

You are hereby notified that you are strictly prohibited from disclosing, copying, distributing, disseminating, or taking any other action against me with regard to this profile and the contents herein. The foregoing prohibitions also apply to your employee , agent , student or any personnel under your direction or control.

The contents of this profile are private and legally privileged and confidential information, and the violation of my personal privacy is punishable by law. UCC 1-103 1-308 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED WITHOUT PREJUDICE"

Being her brother I used less tact to inform her that she had been Facebook scammed by reposting something she saw on a friends' page...and she is an idiot. After all, I am her brother and I take my familial duties very seriously.

Things like this are like urban legends - they just aren't true. Much like those weird apps people say do things like showing you who is looking at your Facebook page, how you can get rich quick, or penis pumps (god knows we have tried enough of those....).

So just so everyone is clear - if you post it on Facebook then it is now public to the world! Even if you have privacy settings on max, if you have any friends or groups you are joined to then they have access to select parts of your page.

As a reminder here are a few rules for Facebook to protect yourself:

1. Never friend your boss, manager, supervisor, or anyone in HR. IF you do then make sure you slap them in a group titled Work Friends and never, ever post public stuff to that group.

2. Never post when drunk or high. Really it's not as funny as you think it is.

3. Never post in anger or sadness because that is just a pathetic cry for attention.

4. Think to yourself before you post, "If I saw this on a Bro's page would I laugh at him later for it?" If the answer is yes then don't post it.

5. Never post anything that incriminates you in any way. One dumbass posted a status update with picture of him cheating on his Calculus test and he had the T.A. friended who also grades tests. Duh!

Follow these simple rules and you should be fairly safe and not need to spout ridiculous things about being strictly prohibited from using things on a social networking site.
